Good evening, friends!
Guess what? While searching for a creative challenge, I decided to check out Adobe's creative ideas and was pleasantly surprised to find a contest related to the musician Marshmello. The challenge was to create a new design for Marshmello's helmet, which, if you don't know, is completely white—just begging for some artwork! There are countless possibilities, and I had a lot of fun with this project.
I'm not quite confident enough to submit any of my work done in the Adobe Creative Cloud apps for this contest, but I learned a lot as I played around with ideas. In that sense, mission accomplished!
To kick things off, I listened to Marshmello while designing. My favorite song by him is "Shockwave," so I tried to think about how that song made me feel and what that might look like visually. I took an image of Marshmello's helmet, created a layer mask, and found an image I really liked to place behind the helmet. I added a gradient layer to make the background less overpowering.
I also practiced using the Puppet Warp and Perspective Warp tools to give the appearance that the image was wrapping around the helmet. For the top image, I aimed to make it look like light was bursting from within the helmet, which I wasn't sure would work as I envisioned it, but I think it turned out fairly well! I then added an inner glow effect to the image on the outside of the helmet, and I really liked the result.
In a few months, I might look back at this and laugh, as I'm sure I'll think it’s nothing compared to what I could create then. But that's part of growing as a designer! I definitely want to revisit this in a few months with any new skills I've acquired and a fresh perspective.
Oh, and I forgot to mention—if you’re a fan of Marshmello, check out the link below and give it a shot! The winner gets 10000.00, along with having their design featured on Marshmello's helmet, a copy of that helmet with the winning design, and his autograph!
